The daughter of the late Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie Presley, has voiced her grievances against director Sofia Coppola and her mother, Priscilla Presley, over the negative portrayal of her iconic father, Elvis Presley.
Lisa Marie Presley reportedly conveyed her concerns to film director Sofia Coppola four months before her passing, as reported by Variety.
The film in question, titled "Priscilla," is based on Priscilla's 1985 memoir, "Elvis and Me," and offers a portrayal of Priscilla's life, particularly her relationship with Elvis, which began when she was just 14 years old. Priscilla Presley has expressed her support for the film.
Sofia Coppola assured Lisa Marie that Elvis is portrayed in the movie with "sensitivity and complexity."
However, Lisa Marie expressed her strong dissatisfaction in an email, stating, "My father only comes across as a predator and manipulative." She continued, "As his daughter, I don't read this and see any of my father in this character. I don't read this and see my mother's perspective of my father. I read this and see your shockingly vengeful and contemptuous perspective, and I don't understand why."
In response to her disapproval, Lisa Marie vowed to publicly criticize the movie and her mother's association with it, given that Priscilla is listed as an executive producer.
She expressed concern that her mother may not fully grasp the nuance in the portrayal or comprehend how Elvis will be perceived once the movie is released. She emphasized her protective stance towards her mother, who has dedicated her life to upholding her father's legacy, and worried that Priscilla might not fully grasp the intentions behind the film and its potential consequences.
Priscilla, on the other hand, mentioned that Coppola, an Oscar winner for her writing on "Lost in Translation" in 2004, had thoroughly researched the project. She acknowledged having discussions with the acclaimed director about it.
