Meryl Streep's Method Acting Misery Emily Blunt Recalls Terrifying Experience on The Devil Wears Prada Set

In the latest episode of Variety's Actors on Actors series, Emily Blunt opened up about the intense on-set experience of working with Meryl Streep on the iconic 2006 film, "The Devil Wears Prada." Blunt, who played a supporting role in the movie, revealed that Streep's portrayal of the formidable fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly was not only impressive but also slightly terrifying.

Blunt shared her perspective with Brian Cox, emphasizing Streep's commitment to method acting for the role. She described Streep as "amazing" but acknowledged that playing Miranda made the three-time Oscar winner "miserable." According to Blunt, this was one of the first instances of Streep attempting method acting, drawing inspiration from the real-life Anna Wintour.

Streep's method acting, however, proved to be a challenging experience for the accomplished actress. In a reunion interview for the film's 15th anniversary in 2021, Streep expressed her discomfort with the approach, calling it "horrible" and revealing that it was also her last attempt at method acting. Despite feeling miserable in her trailer, she could hear the rest of the cast enjoying themselves on set.

During the interview with Entertainment Weekly, Streep admitted to being "so depressed" while filming but attributed it to the toll of embracing method acting. Reflecting on the experience, she humorously mentioned, "I said, ‘Well, it's the price you pay for being boss!’ That's the last time I ever attempted a Method thing!"

Brian Cox, who played a similarly feared media mogul on HBO's Succession, expressed his admiration for "The Devil Wears Prada" during the Actors on Actors discussion. Blunt acknowledged that the film marked an "extraordinary overnight shift" in her career, highlighting the impact of the movie and Streep's memorable performance.
