Sally Field Claims Burt Reynolds Refused to Attend 1980 Oscars Due to Jealousy

Sally Field reveals in the upcoming book, "50 Oscar Nights," that her ex-boyfriend Burt Reynolds was jealous of her success during the 1980 Oscars. Field, nominated for her breakout performance in "Norma Rae," wanted to attend the Cannes Film Festival to support the film, but Reynolds discouraged her, expressing doubt about her chances of winning.

According to Field, Reynolds exhibited unkind behavior and refused to accompany her to the 52nd Academy Awards. Left without a date, Field attended the ceremony with actor and comedian David Steinberg and his wife, Judy, who turned it into a celebratory experience with a limousine and champagne.

Field and Reynolds had an on-and-off relationship for five years in the late '70s and early '80s after meeting on the set of "Smokey and the Bandit." This isn't the first time Field has criticized Reynolds; she previously mentioned on "Watch What Happens Live" that he was a lousy kisser.

Despite their tumultuous relationship, Reynolds acknowledged Field as a special love in his memoir "But Enough About Me," expressing regret for not fighting harder for their relationship. Burt Reynolds passed away in 2018 at the age of 82.
