The 52-year-old actress, making a surprise appearance at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, took the stage with the support of a cane and assistance from host Anthony Anderson. Dressed in a stunning Christian Siriano burgundy velvet gown, Applegate was visibly emotional as the crowd showered her with applause.
Acknowledging the gesture, she lightened the mood with humor, taking a playful jab at Hollywood's trends. "Thank you so much. Oh my God. You’re totally shaming me with the disability by standing up. Body not by ozempic," she quipped, referencing the Type 2 diabetes drug that has gained popularity as a weight loss supplement.
Continuing in her signature comedic style, she added, "Some of you may know me as Kelly Bundy from ‘Married With Children’ ... we don’t have to applaud every time I do something."
Despite the levity, tears continued to roll down Applegate's face as she expressed her gratitude to play diverse characters and acknowledged her fellow nominees. Last year, she had hinted that the 2023 SAG Awards might be her last as an actor due to her ongoing battle with MS, a disabling disease affecting the brain and spinal cord.
Reflecting on her diagnosis in early 2021, Applegate has been open about how MS has impacted her career, admitting to being "a wreck every day" during the filming of "Dead to Me" from 2019 to 2022. Despite the challenges, she praised the "incredible" cast and crew for accommodating her needs on set.
