In her "Used to Be Young" TikTok series, Miley Cyrus delves into the complexities of her past, opening up about her marriage with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
After candidly discussing controversial moments from her career, the 30-year-old superstar took a somber turn to address a more serious topic. In a TikTok shared on Wednesday, Cyrus revealed the pivotal moment when she realized her marriage to the Australian actor, 33, was coming to an end.
The revelation occurred at the Glastonbury music festival in June 2019. Cyrus shared, "Glastonbury was in June, which was when the decision had been made." Despite a decade-long relationship and a wedding in December 2018, the aftermath of the November 2018 California wildfires, which destroyed their home, had a profound impact on their union.
Cyrus explained, "Me and Liam’s commitment to being married, of course, came from a place of love first because we had been together for 10 years, but also from a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could." The decision to end the marriage was crystallized on the day of her Glastonbury performance. She stated, "The day of the [Glastonbury] show was the day I had decided it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship."
Reflecting on the aftermath, Cyrus shared what she learned from the experience. "That was another moment where the work, the performance, the character came first," she admitted. "I guess that’s why it’s now so important to me for that not to be the case — that the human comes first."
Several months later, Hemsworth filed for divorce in August 2019, with an official settlement reached in early 2020.
Throughout the "Used to Be Young" series, Cyrus also touched on the sweet moments of her relationship with Hemsworth, recounting their meeting on the set of the 2010 romance film The Last Song and the significance of their shared home in Malibu.
